Girls Varsity Golf · LCN Girls’ Golf off to Hot Start

The LCN Girls’ Golf program is off to a great start.

After beating traditional powerhouse Marysville in the first match of the year, the team has just kept on winning, going 3-0.

The Crusaders are led by head coach, Sharon Hicks and senior captain, Megan Sarotte.

“Megan has been been medalist (best scorer) twice and Ireland Papa once. Megan averages about 46 for 9; Ireland low 50’s. Maddie Quick is a freshman who is shooting in the 50’s as well,” Coach Hicks said.

In addition to some standout players, Coach Hicks also credited the depth of the team for its early success.

“We have depth. One of our returning Sophomores, Amanda Schoeninger, is having an amazing season. Although we have just begun, I anticipate she will finish strong. Furthermore, our new recruits are solid and disciplined,” Coach Hicks said. “They are improving every round and give us the added points when the matches become competitive. Most of our Freshmen have already earned their Varsity letters by scoring in dual matches. Olivia Brown, Ryley Splitt, Alexa Velloney, Sarah Loeffler and Christine Loeffler have improved immensely in the first month. Our program is growing and the girls have stepped up their game!”

This week, the Crusaders will take on Lakeview at St. Clair Shores Golf Course on Tuesday before re-matching with Marysville on Thursday.

It should be another exciting week for the Crusader Girls’ Golf program as they continue to grow and take on great competition.

Girls Junior Varsity Tennis, Girls Varsity Tennis · Girls Tennis Visits Atwood Elementary

On Wednesday March 26th the girls’ varsity tennis team visited a school in a different fashion then what they have done in the past. Instead of visiting the schools tennis courts the girls brought their rackets into the gymnasium of Atwood Elementary to visit with a third grade class during Duane Starzyk’s gym class. Duane Starzyk is the assistant coach of the girls’ varsity team. During the class period with the students lead in drills and activities by head varsity coach Jed Jones.

Students were introduced to many of the drills that the varsity team does on a daily basis in order to develop strong hand eye coordination and increase racket strength. “It was some much fun to see the third graders doing the same drills that we practice on a daily basis, and help them practice new skills,” said senior captain Jasmine Vedua, “I went to school here, (Atwood Elementary), and to be able to come back and have the opportunity to do this here was awesome.” During the class students worked in an observer and practice atmosphere where Coach Jones and the girls would demonstrate a drill for the third graders to practice and they would turn over their rackets and allow the students to attempt the drill. The highlight of the drill activities was a game called around the world in which there is one line on each side of the court and you get one shot and must run to the other side of the court and get in the other line before it is your turn to hit. “I couldn’t stop laughing during around the world,” said junior Monika Skawinska, “It was so awesome to see all of the kids playing around the world with us.”

To end the day together the girls gave each student a tennis ball to take home and the opportunity of a life time to have their gift signed by each one of the girls. Coach Starzyk commented “All of the girls looked like European tennis stars as they were asked for their autographs by the third graders. What an amazing event this was for the students and the girls’ tennis team.”
